About the story

Little Sara Crewe is kind, smart, imaginative, cultivated, and thoroughly rich. When she arrives at Miss Minchin’s Select Seminary for Young Ladies in London, she’s treated like a princess—until her father dies, having been ruined financially.  Now that she’s poor, she’s banished to the attic and treated worse than her servant friend. But her determination to stay “a princess inside” results in a new friendship that transforms her world overnight.  A Little Princess, is a heartwarming, inspirational story about staying true to your values, no matter what.

About the LitWits Explorer’s Guide

Your kids can paint London from Sara’s perspective, recreate “the frustrated banquet” as a pivotal plot point, apply the author’s characterization techniques to their own writing, hear about the French Revolution and the plight of street children in Victorian London, transform Sara-esque jam jars (for better or for worse, without affecting the sweetness inside), and so much more!!

The LitWits Kit for A LITTLE PRINCESS by Frances Hodgson Burnett - LITWITS

The Explorer’s Guide for A Little Princess by Frances Hodgson Burnett

Everything in this “experience guide” comes from our unique sensory workshop on A Little Princess. It’s packed with hands-on ways to get into the characters’ shoes. When kids see, feel, hear, taste, smell, and DO what the characters did, they understand more. Better yet, they want to read more.

Explorer’s Guides are web pages packed with downloadables—templates, activity aids, academic handouts, and more. (Here’s a sample, for a different book.) Because our guides live online, we can link you to useful info and audiovisuals. And you’ll always have the very latest updates! A PDF version is included for easy printing.

The Explorer’s Guide for A Little Princess includes:

  • sensory prop suggestions, with photos
  • creative project and activity ideas, with photos
  • printable templates, excerpts, and activity prompts
  • takeaway topics, to fuel meaningful conversations
  • printable handouts for creative writing, the narrative arc, setting, and more

I got the Little Princess LitWit kit to do with my 9 year old daughter while we are homeschooling during the coronavirus pandemic. It was a fabulous way to study the book, and much more interesting, engaging, and memorable than just using vocabulary or review questions! She loved collecting prop items to make a special display on our bookshelf for the week, and enjoyed the art projects greatly. We made the frosted cakes from the “Frustrated Banquet” which all our family was happy to eat, and overall we had a wonderful time together with this study. Thank you!

Tara, thank you SO much for taking the time to come back to our site and write up this sweet review! We’re so glad you and your daughter had fun with Sara, Frances Hodgson Burnett, and LitWits! We feel like we were there too! Yes, kprop collecting is one of the best parts of “LitWitting,” if you’re into it, which your girl was, YAY! and of course you can’t go wrong with CAKE! We always love it when a book gives us a really good reason to choose something delicious for a BookBite. Thank you again for sharing your good times with us!f

This was SO fun! I have loved the little princess for a long time, this was a fun way to do projects based on the book! I am very happy with it.😁

Thanks so much for your review, Selah! We’ve loved that book (and Sara herself) for a long time too, and are so glad you had as much fun with her story as we did.

LitWits are awesome! I have a creative 8 yr old boy and was having a hard time finding any engaging, creative, curriculum that didn’t involve references to popular video games/ TV shows. Then I found LitWits. For me, all the hard stuff is done. They have great art/ experiential activities to get a deeper understanding of the character, time period or situation. They have worksheets that cover history, language arts etc. They have a page devoted to internet resources to further learning..stuff that I couldn’t find when I Googled/Pintristed…things I never would have thought about…but things that my child has enjoyed and gathered deeper learning and understanding from.

Wow Kate thanks SO MUCH for this great review! We’re so happy to know our kit worked well for you — we love envisioning you and your son “doing” this great book together. Thank you for sharing so much detail about the things you enjoyed/appreciated most! You’ve made our day. 🙂
