Around the World in Eighty Days

About the story

The extremely precise, predictable Englishman Phileas Fogg shocks the Reform Club members by betting his entire fortune that he can travel around the world in eighty days. He and his French valet set sail, unaware they’re being tracked by a diligent detective, who thinks Phileas is an infamous bank robber. Is he or isn’t he? We’re not so sure, actually! Around the World in Eighty Days is a study in honor, as well as a literary trip around the world.

About the LitWits Explorer’s Guide

Experience Around the World in Eighty Days with your students in fun, meaningful ways! This story is the original Amazing Race, but with a French valet and lots of whist playing. Your kids can practice their Reform Club demeanor before they sail around the world in eighty minutes — take THAT wager, Phileas Fogg! During their rapid journey they can greet customs officials in the local language, get visas in their freshly-made passports, rescue a desperate widow in India, dine on succulent fruit in an exotic port, join an acrobatic troupe in Hong Kong, and disable runaway trains in the American midwest!

What will they learn? Oh, just classical allusions, the art of imparting facts in dialogue, the pros and cons of British imperialism, the narrative arc of this story, time management skills, global geography, music and languages of other countries, key “takeaway points” about each country, and so much more!

LitWits Explorer’s Guides are private web pages that include creative and academic downloadables. This lesson planning resource is ideal for ages 8-12, but it’s highly adaptable. Scroll down to get more details and a free idea with template.
