Swallows and Amazons

About the story

When the Walker children get permission from their mother to camp out on a nearby island in England’s Lake District, they’re in heaven. Once they set sail on the Swallow and set up camp on Wild Cat Island, they’re ready for adventure—and here it comes, in the form of the Blackett girls sailing the Amazon. Their imaginative powers, resourcefulness, and teamwork lead to charming (and alarming) adventures.  Swallows and Amazons will enchant any child who’s ever dreamed of being parent-free in the wild!

About the LitWits Explorer’s Guide

Experience Swallows and Amazons with your students in fun, meaningful ways! There won’t be any duffers on board as your kids step their masts, set their sails, and make for Wild Cat Island! They can build their own Swallows, learn shipbuilding terms, earn “island badges” in a relay that involves belting out “Spanish Ladies,” feast on smashed-fly biscuits and “grog,” write their own mini adventures, and so much more!

LitWits Explorer’s Guides are private web pages that include creative and academic downloadables. This lesson planning resource is ideal for ages 8-12, but it’s highly adaptable. Scroll down to get more details and a free idea with template.

Product Description

Have straight-from-the-story fun with The LitWits Kit for SWALLOWS AND AMAZONS by Arthur Ransome - LITWITS

The LitWits Explorer’s Guide for Swallows and Amazons by Arthur Ransome

Everything in this “experience guide” comes from our unique sensory workshop on Swallows and Amazons.  It’s packed with hands-on ways to get into the characters’ shoes. When kids see, feel, hear, taste, smell, and DO what the characters did, they understand more. Better yet, they want to read more.

LitWits Explorer’s Guides are web pages packed with downloadables—templates, activity aids, academic handouts, and more. (Here’s a sample, for a different book.) Because our guides live online, we can link you to useful info and audiovisuals. And you’ll always have the very latest updates!

The LitWits Explorer’s Guide for Swallows and Amazons includes:

  • sensory prop suggestions, with photos
  • creative project and activity ideas, with photos
  • printable templates, excerpts, and activity prompts
  • takeaway topics, to fuel meaningful conversations
  • printable handouts for creative writing, the narrative arc, setting, and more
  • research and audiovisual links, for one-stop prep and homework help
  • great quotes from the book, where copyright allows

This guide is adaptable to a wide range of ages. (See the Ways to Use tab for classroom and homeschool uses.) We find 8-12-year-olds consistently “ready to LitWit,” but you know best what your kids are ready for, interested in, and capable of.

1 review for Swallows and Amazons

  1. Liz Carlson (verified owner)

The folks at LitWit have done it again. Their creative approach to books make even the most reluctant reader want to dive into a good book. Swallows and Amazons is a beautiful book that slowly unfurls and reveals the inner life of children. Because it is a challenging read, having engaging projects and activities will make the book more approachable. The kit includes a model, art projects, and like any good book club: snacks that were vital to the book. This is the second LitWit kit I’ve bought and they have saved me countless hours of compiling and creating. I highly recommend their products.
