The Hobbit

About the story

Bilbo Baggins is a sedate, boring little hobbit who enjoys a comfortable stay-at-home life in the Shire. But when the wizard Gandalf and a company of dwarves arrive, life becomes a tremendous adventure. Against his will (at first) he accompanies them on a journey to raid a dragon’s treasure hoard inside Lonely Mountain. As they travel, Bilbo runs into frightening creatures and finds a magic ring that saves his life. With every challenge he grows, and soon he’s saving the lives of the dwarves, and finding out just what he’s made of:  courage, intelligence, and loyalty.  The Hobbit is an exciting, beautiful adventure through Middle Earth, to grasp the real treasure of potential.

Have straight-from-the-story fun with The LitWits Kit for THE HOBBIT by JRR Tolkien

The LitWits Explorer’s Guide for The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien

Everything in this “experience guide” comes from our unique sensory workshop on The Hobbit. It’s packed with hands-on ways to get into the characters’ shoes. When kids see, feel, hear, taste, smell, and DO what the characters did, they understand more. Better yet, they want to read more.

LitWits Explorer’s Guides are web pages packed with downloadables—templates, activity aids, academic handouts, and more. (Here’s a sample, for a different book.) Because our guides live online, we can link you to useful info and audiovisuals. And you’ll always have the very latest updates!

The LitWits Explorer’s Guide for The Hobbit includes:

  • sensory prop suggestions, with photos
  • creative project and activity ideas, with photos
  • printable templates, excerpts, and activity prompts
  • takeaway topics, to fuel meaningful conversations
  • printable handouts for creative writing, the narrative arc, setting, and more
  • research and audiovisual links, for one-stop prep and homework help
  • great quotes from the book, where copyright allows

This guide is adaptable to a wide range of ages. (See the Ways to Use tab for classroom and homeschool uses.) We find 8-12-year-olds consistently “ready to LitWit,” but you know best what your kids are ready for, interested in, and capable of.

Is there a better place to explore than Middle Earth? And what better way to explore it than with a group of friends? After using the LitWits kit to dive deeper into our reading of The Hobbit, we invited a small group of friends to join us for a wonderful day in Middle Earth, solving riddles, identifying what Gollum had in his pocketses and dining at the table of Beorn, all inspired by this wonderful LitWits kit.

Of all the LitWits kit adventures this year, this one was the best…so far!
So gather your friends – Hobbit, Man, Elf, Dwarf, Wizard, Eagle, and maybe even the rare friendly Goblin, and enjoy a day in Middle Earth together with these fun LitWits kit activities, too.
